Weekend music: Kumusta Na

The first EDSA People Power was commemorated this week. For those who weren't born 24 years ago, this event ended the rule of former president Ferdinand Marcos and, as people would say, welcomed the advent of a new era of democracy under then president Cory Aquino. After two decades of liberation, the question we should ask is: where are we now?

I guess the song "Kamusta Na" from Yano sums it up.

Free sites where you can download music

I like listening to music. And this interest has made me a fan of free streaming/listening sites where I can find music. I've encountered Napster, Kazaa, and Limewire, and they've all been good to me for the past couple of years.

Now I've made another discovery -- actually two -- that will once again satiate my fill of the latest music and some of the old ones that are now a bit hard to find.

First is BeeMP3.com. It's a site where you can search, listen, and download songs. I happen to come across it just late last year while looking for an MP3 of a certain song that was going through my head. I'm a fan up to now. Most of the new music I'm hearing over the radio are there.

Looking at it, I don't think it's one site where just one person collated the songs there. When you try to search for a song, it gives you a list of sources that host that particular song. Upon clicking, you will be directed to a page where you can listen or download for free.

The other is abMP3.com, which is a site similar to BeeMP3. It's almost the same as the first, except probably for the colors and layout. Same thing: search, listen, download. I found this a while ago when I was looking for an 80s song that I couldn't find in BeeMP3. This one saved me from my last song syndrome.

I'm pretty sure these are just a few sites where you can stream songs for free. But people, be aware of your responsibility when using these sites: these are meant to be for private use and not for gaining profit. So if you want these sites to be up for a long time, don't use them for selling the songs you could get there. Use them for your own enjoyment and everyone will end up happy.

    Is this poaching?

A friend of mine shared this website about trophy hunting in the Philippines. It offers a safari package (at a very pricey amount, I must say) that allows people from all over the world to hunt for rare animal species in our country, including tamaraw and baboy damo.

Though hunting is a sport, I and some of my friends are a bit concerned -- some of their game are endangered species. And it's upsetting to see that this is still tolerated.

I'm no PETA member and I do eat meat, but seeing photos of dead forest buffaloes kinda made me sad. And what happens to them, will they be hung on their walls or be brought to a taxidermist then be exhibited -- then what? And if they ran out of buffaloes and wild pigs, what's next?

I'm not sure as to what extent their hunting expeditions go, but I hope that this is controlled and that these species won't be put into the extinct list very soon.

Weekend movie: Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

The title's quite a mouthful, but I could summarize the movie in these words: Usual juvie story mixed with Greek mythology. Okay fine, something like Harry Potter.

Directed by Chris Columbus, the same one at the helm of the first HP movies, this book to silverscreen adaptation is about a teenage boy named -- who else -- Percy, who learns that he is a demi-god: son of a mortal woman by Poseidon, the god of the seas. For some reason, Zeus and everyone else in Olympus thinks that Percy Jackson stole Zeus's thunderbolt. Wanting to prove his innocence, he goes on a quest along with his BFF Grover, who is actually a satyr assigned as his protector, and Annabeth, demi-god daughter of Athena.

That's just the tip of the iceberg, since I don't want to spoil it to you guys. All in all, it was quite entertaining. It would make your kids a bit interested in Greek mythology. I don't think Hades would have fires in his Underworld, though (it isn't exactly Hell, you know). Also, from the synopsis found in the series' website, I would think that Percy's character wasn't explored that much. And again, it wasn't clear why he was accused of stealing the lightning bolt.

Still, it's quite nice, and I would suggest seeing this with your children. If you're a kid at heart, then this one's pretty much a feel-good movie right for you. Doesn't have a lasting effect in the memory, though. You've been warned.

    The Last Airbender Official Trailer

I've been a fan of Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender. It was really fun to watch and I'd say it's got one of the best storylines of this generation's batch of animated series.

Since last year, we knew that it was going to be made into a full length live action movie to be directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Truth to tell, I was kinda wary of him being on the helm of the film because the past movies he did were from his own ideas. Shyamalan doing an adaptation seems, well, not too good.

Add to that the casting of the characters. He got a lot of flak from die-hard Avatar fans, which also included me. The teaser trailer was okay, kinda ignited my curiosity as to whether or not Shyamalan could pull this off. But here comes the official trailer, and I must say my heart skipped a beat.

    Watch it here:

Again, casting could've been better. The soundtrack's pretty weird (why does everyone want to sound like 300?). And what's that on Aang -- is that a tattoo? And for those of you looking for Appa, my friend says he's there; his tail was more visible in the Superbowl ad.

I'd probably give this film -- and Shyamalan -- a chance. Let's see if it lives up to the expectations of millions of fans around the world.

Damn, Shyamalan. Don't make me cringe.

    Spot.ph reveals 10 motel myths

A friend of mine passed me this article about the 10 motel secrets that you think you knew but didn't. It was pretty interesting, as it somehow broke the stereotype of motels here in Manila as a sleaze spot.

Believe it or not, I have been in a motel -- not for some sexy time, but to actually have a Christmas party with my teammates. Yes, last year, my officemates organized a party in a motel in Malate called Sohotel. It's located near the Malate Church and almost behind Aristocrat. We reserved the Party Suite, an L-shaped room that had a sofa, a bar, 2 huge flat screen TVs with DVD and videoke, and a really big bed that would fit like 8-10 people. There's even a Wii there. The restroom had a TV and Jacuzzi, which of course we didn't use. They offered buffet style dinner for us. On the outside, you'd really know it's a motel, but when you get inside, you'd forget it's one -- other than the fact that there's a sachet of lubricant and condom on the bed and the urinals of the guys just beside the common restroom sink.

Here are some photos of Sohotel's Party Suite:

With my "wholesome" experience in a motel, I could say that I could attest to the facts that broke myths #6, 7, and 10. We didn't tune in to any TV station, so I don't know about myth #9. As for the rest, well, I'll have to trust the source. Haha!

    Empireonline's 50 Worst Movies Ever

A friend of mine shared me Empireonline.com's list of the 50 Worst Movies Ever. It's got an interesting lineup of epic movie fails voted by its readers. I've watched some of those, including Spiderman 3, Matrix Revolutions, Max Payne, Ultraviolet, Street Fighter, and The Spirit -- all that bored me to death. Okay, so maybe with the exception of Street Fighter; it was quite funny, though I liked the animated movie better (Vega's "My face!!!" line did it for me).

I'm just curious as to why Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was in the list. I kinda enjoyed it, not as much as the first, but I don't think it was one of the worst films. Was wondering where Hitman, Daredevil, and LXG were. Surprisingly no one voted for them. Also Signs and The Village, which both would have made me sleep after 30 minutes of viewing had I not anticipated when Shyamalan would do a cameo (he does that a lot, I wonder why -- will he be one of the Water Tribe in the upcoming The Last Airbender?).

So learn if the movies you hated are on their list. Check out Empireonline's 50 Worst Movies here.
