Who is Rebecca Black?

A friend of mine posted this question on his Twitter, prompting me to search for this name on Google. Turns out Rebecca Black is a pretty young thing turned Internet "sensation" for her song entitled "Friday"

And guess what? This song is now known as "The Worst Song Ever," as pointed out by Yahoo Music and even Time Magazine. Whoa!

Honestly though, I really can't blame Rebecca Black for getting this kind of flak from everywhere. But whoever wrote and produced this song should be hiding under his/ her bed in shame right now. Lousy lyrics, lousy melody. Poor girl can sing (or so it seems, listen to the background vocals by the end of the video) but nothing in this song and video showcased her talent.

These times, it's so easy to take the Justin Bieber route -- going viral first -- and become renowned worldwide. But wouldn't it be better to be famous than infamous?

Unfortunately for Rebecca Black, she's the latter.

Weekend music: Kumusta Na

The first EDSA People Power was commemorated this week. For those who weren't born 24 years ago, this event ended the rule of former president Ferdinand Marcos and, as people would say, welcomed the advent of a new era of democracy under then president Cory Aquino. After two decades of liberation, the question we should ask is: where are we now?

I guess the song "Kamusta Na" from Yano sums it up.

Free sites where you can download music

I like listening to music. And this interest has made me a fan of free streaming/listening sites where I can find music. I've encountered Napster, Kazaa, and Limewire, and they've all been good to me for the past couple of years.

Now I've made another discovery -- actually two -- that will once again satiate my fill of the latest music and some of the old ones that are now a bit hard to find.

First is BeeMP3.com. It's a site where you can search, listen, and download songs. I happen to come across it just late last year while looking for an MP3 of a certain song that was going through my head. I'm a fan up to now. Most of the new music I'm hearing over the radio are there.

Looking at it, I don't think it's one site where just one person collated the songs there. When you try to search for a song, it gives you a list of sources that host that particular song. Upon clicking, you will be directed to a page where you can listen or download for free.

The other is abMP3.com, which is a site similar to BeeMP3. It's almost the same as the first, except probably for the colors and layout. Same thing: search, listen, download. I found this a while ago when I was looking for an 80s song that I couldn't find in BeeMP3. This one saved me from my last song syndrome.

I'm pretty sure these are just a few sites where you can stream songs for free. But people, be aware of your responsibility when using these sites: these are meant to be for private use and not for gaining profit. So if you want these sites to be up for a long time, don't use them for selling the songs you could get there. Use them for your own enjoyment and everyone will end up happy.

The Killers Asian Tour -- cancelled?

Just heard that The Killers aren't coming to town. And not just in Manila, but they've also decided to cancel the rest of their Asian tour, so fans in Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing, Seoul, and Tokyo would have to wait for another announcement when they'll be really coming over.

They've released a statement on their website, saying that one of the members' relative is suffering from a serious illness. Let's hope that family member will be on the road to recovery soon so that their fans in the Asian region would get to see and rock with them live.
